Thriller is a movie genre of literature, film and television. thrillers make the viewer's moods, give them a high level of suspense, excitement, anticipation and terror.   

Thriller has many elements. The elements are shown below in the picture example:

 This picture of an example (psycho 1960) of a thriller creates suspense and tension. It creates both due to the person’s face not being scene. Also it will make people feel uneasy due to there being a knife in the persons hand and also not knowing what’s going to happen next.

There are different type of thrillers:

•         Legal thriller - This is a sub genre of thriller includes major characters which are usually lawyers and their employees.
• ·      Political thriller - This thriller is when a hero/heroine must ensure stability of the government that employs him/her.
• ·      Psychological thriller - In psychological thrillers generally the conflict between the main characters are mental and emotional, rather than physical. Characters either by accident or their own curiousness, are dragged into a dangerous conflict or situation that they are not prepared to resolve.
• ·      Spy thriller - This type of thriller is in which the protagonist is generally against agents of a rival government or terrorists.
• ·      Supernatural thriller - Are thrillers in which the film brings in an otherworldly  element such as a fantasy or supernatural mixed with tension, suspense and plot twists.
• ·      Comedy thriller - this genre is a combination of humour and suspense. Also action can occur.
• ·      Conspiracy thriller - a hero or heroine comes across a large powerful group of enemies on only who the hero/heroine recognizes.
• ·      Crime thriller -this genre is a hybrid. The hybrid consists of crime and thriller. This offers a suspenseful account of successful or unsuccessful crimes. This thriller usually involves a serial killer, robbers, murders, shootouts, chases and heists.
• ·      Erotic thriller - This type of thriller has sexual relationships that has an emphasis of eroticism.  
•      Action thriller - is when a hero/heroine confronts dangerous acts such as obstacles and tries to avoid them. usually a 'race against the clock'.
•      Horror thriller - type of film that focuses on suspense, tension, mystery and investigation elements with an emphasis on fear/terror and gore.

Meta genres:

Roller coaster of emotions: Is when there are many ups and downs in the film. This makes the audience intrigued and off-their seats. It makes the viewers feel like they are in the movie and also experience what is going on in the movie. An example of a movie which involves roller coaster of emotions is 'The Dark Knight Rises - Batman'. This has a lot of ups and downs due to feeling sympathy for Batman when he gets hurt and happy when he isn't.

Anxiety - Is when a worry nervousness or unease about something with a uncertain outcome. Anxiety in thrillers are one of the main effects of watching a thriller. It makes you feel uneasy by watching some films. an example of a Anxiety in a thriller is 'Hannibal'. It makes people feel uneasy due to the film being quite gory which will make many people watching feel uneasy.

Tension - Tension is the mental or emotional strain. It makes you wary of what is going to happen in a film. Tension is the effect which will make you get goosebumps. It makes you get goose bumps due to not knowing whats going to happen next. An example of tension in a movie is 'The woman in black'. It makes people feel tension in the movie due to dark scenes and scary non-digetic music,

In the film Brick the tunnel scene creates a sense of leaping into the unknown which will make people feel uneasy due to not knowing what happens next.

 

The knife scene in Brick has a knife being pulled out. This will make the audience scared due to a weapon being amongst the action. Also it will make people be off their seats due to not knowing what the enemy is going to do with the knife.

Brick (2006) – Thriller 

Ø  Brick is an eye-catching thriller made in 2005.

Ø       In the opening scenes of the thriller there is immediately a death scene. This creates tension and makes the audience intrigued and off their seats.

Ø  There also is running water which builds tension in the movie to create an unpredictable story line which eaves the audience very interested on what to happen next in the film.

Ø  There are also a shot of people’s lower body running away from something. This builds a lot of tension and makes the viewer’s think why the characters are running away and what they are running away from.

Ø  There is also a dark tunnel in the opening of this thriller. This could symbolize that the characters are plunging themselves into the unknown.

Ø  When the male character in the film is on his phone to the woman, the woman says ‘good to see you’ even though she is not there. This makes the man turn around outside the phone box he is in. This is another convention of a thriller movie.

Ø  Finally in the opening of the thriller when the car and the cigarette is flicked out of the car you automatically get the feel that the character is driving. He is driving the car at high speeds whilst smoking. This indicates to the audience that he is the ‘bad boy’/ ’thug’ of the movie. The burning cigarette can symbolize someone’s life burning away which creates the tension in the thriller.

This will create suspense and tension due to people not knowing what pranks are going to be pulled on each other. My Questionnaire:

- Most of the feedback was positive on the questionnaire.

-Most people watch movies at least once a week

-The most disliked genre of thrillers are horror movies.

- All people liked the pitch ideas and said it will make a good thriller.

    - Many people said that they like the anxiety and tension in the thrillers. This makes people get attracted to thriller movies and makes them watch it.

                                                                 Prelim Task

Synopsis: A hero gets injured from a battle against a villain and does all they can to save the world.

Synopsis opening: It begins with a normal man who gets attacked by a villain. The hero gets injured and loses a lot of confindence due to him getting injured. This will get the audience anxious and a lot of tension will happen due the hero getting hurt.This will draw the audience in and make them be apart of the film. There will be many roller-coaster of emotions. This is a good thriller opening due to the thriller already having thriller elements in it which will already draw the audience in the film and make them stay of their seats for the remainder of the thriller.
